First and foremost, I am a parent. I have three beautiful daughters who attend Carroll County Public Schools. My wife Katie and I have taught our girls that they can achieve anything they want in life if they stay positive and put in the effort. Before our children leave for school each morning, we remind them of our family motto; Work Hard and Be Kind. I believe a strong family foundation builds confident children, and confident children can change the world.
I have spent my entire career in healthcare finance. I am currently a senior director of finance for a large healthcare system here in Maryland. I believe my background will be advantageous as we work with a tight budget, year in and year out. Currently, 88% of the CCPS budget is allotted towards salaries and benefits. It will be important that the next board has a strong finance background to ensure every tax dollar allocated to CCPS by the county commissioners is spent wisely.
I currently serve as Vice President of North Carroll Recreation Council and President of the North Carroll Girls Lacrosse Program. Since coaching my nephew in the Sykesville Raiders Football Program 10 years ago, I have spent many hours volunteering and giving back to the community through athletics.
I made a promise to my three children on October 19, 2020, the day schools reopened (hybrid), that I would fight to make sure they never had to shoulder the burden of protection again. I would fight for them to attend school and be kids! I make that same promise to every child and parent of CCPS.
If we have learned anything through the pandemic, parents deserve a voice in their children's education. I am a parent who fought hard to ensure my kids had a chance to attend school, mask optional. It is something I am proud of and, if elected, I will ensure parents have a voice in their children's education.
Our schools are one of the biggest reasons we wanted to raise our family in Carroll County. We have the BEST teachers! They deserve our respect and support. I will work hard with our newly elected commissioners to ensure we have the funding necessary to compensate our teachers and staff to a level reflective of their hard work and dedication.
We need to ensure our students attend schools that are free of political influence and bias. We need to focus on academics that are age appropriate and get back to education. Even after two years of successful summer learning, our students are still recovering from learning loss. Closing that gap and creating confident students fosters lifelong learning.
One of the leading reasons teachers leave the profession is due to disruptions in the classroom. The state's restorative justice policy has gone too far to protect bullies at the expense of our students receiving a quality education. I will work with the MSDE to change the state's policies and give power back to local school districts to hold bullies accountable for their actions. No kid should be scared to go to school and face endless bullying.
There are many extracurricular activities provided by CCPS that foster confidence in our students. My wife and I, former college athletes, believe athletics help foster growth and fortitude in our children. We believe this isn't unique to just sports. Surrounding yourself with people working towards and accomplishing a similar goal, whether it's in the theater, on a robotics team, being a part of the chorus or band, or debate team can achieve the same end goal of building confidence in our children. I will be an advocate and supporter of extracurricular activities for CCPS students.
